'54% of people say that a family member, friend, work colleague or themselves have consulted a counsellor or psychotherapist' BACP Research
Shirley MacKenzie, CTA, PTSTA, FCIPD
UKCP Registered Psychotherapist, EMDR Practitioner & organisational consultant
Shirley is an experienced counsellor & psychotherapist with over 20 years’ experience; she works in private practice where most clients self refer. She also works with organisations offering employee counselling and trauma debriefing. Individuals and couples are welcome. Shirley also offers supervision to other therapists as a Provisional Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst.
Shirley invites clients to see counselling and therapy as personal development (getting to know and understand yourself and your very important defences). Clients are encouraged to focus on what (s)he wants to change to improve relationships, life style and contentment.
Evidence suggests that what is important in counselling is the relationship with the therapist and you are therefore invited to phone for an informal exploratory conversation to explore if counselling is right for you.
Shirley is also experienced in organisational work in human resources and has developed a specialist knowledge of bullying, harassment and trauma in the workplace. She trains harassment officers and workplace mediators and supports organisations with complex grievances.
There are different modalities of counselling; Shirley is trained and accredited in Transactional Analysis (CTA) and is a member of both the UKATA and UKCP & on their register of practitioners. She adhers to the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice guidelines.
Shirley also practices EMDR which is now recommended by the NHS as part of NICE guidelines for trauma and deep distress. Shirley also trained in person centred counselling originally. More details of these approaches can be found on ‘About Services’ page.
Shirley also works alongside other therapists of similar training and experience in both Edinburgh and Stirling.
